Mother of missing American tourist arrives in Peru to join search efforts

A mother does not lose faith. The mother of U.S. citizen Ian Thomas Treger (29 years old) arrived in the Cusco region with a single, heartbreaking goal: to personally join the rescue teams searching for her son, who has been missing for over a month.

The young man was last seen when he set out on a hike to the famous Vinicunca area, known worldwide as the Rainbow Mountain. Given the lack of contact, a formal report of his disappearance was filed in Peru with the direct support of the United States Embassy, following intense initial efforts by his mother from abroad.

A desperate plea to the authorities

Upon her arrival in Cusco, Ian Thomas’s mother made a public and urgent appeal to the High Mountain Police, tourism agencies, and local community members: she earnestly requested that search efforts not be halted and patrols not suspended until her son’s exact whereabouts are determined.
The routes to Vinicunca and the alternative circuits of the Vilcanota mountain range present complex geographical terrain and changing weather conditions. Therefore, the next few hours and the support of local guides are crucial for the search.

Global Mountain Community Service: If you are a tour guide, transporter, mountaineer, or have been on the Vinicunca circuit in recent weeks and have any information, photographs, or data that could help trace Ian Thomas Treger’s route, please contact the relevant authorities or the Cusco High Mountain Police immediately.

From Global Mountain, we join the family’s plea. Treger, and we extend our full solidarity to his mother during this difficult time. We hope that the efforts of the Cusco authorities will bear fruit very soon.
